How to siphon from a modern vehicle? (Not trying to get free gas here...)

OK so you seriously can’t make this shit up. My neighbor’s nephew was high AF on something or other, lit his SUV on fire, then managed to stab a hole in my neighbor’s gas tank using a kitche n knife. The fire department patched the hole temporarily with some putty or something.

My question is, how do you drain a gas tank on a ~2000 Ranger? We haven’t been able siphon it so far cause there’s some anti-theft thing going on. Do we just enlarge the hole in the bottom of the tank and empty it into a bucket? It’s only like 5 gallons of fuel .

I’m afraid someone’s going to flick a cigarette butt and send the whole damn thing up like a late-summer C hristmas tree.

Right? I wish we had “ flathead county police blotter” style stuff going on around here instead . “Man calls 911 because a loose dog got into his potato patch ”

8/5/2020-

3:04 p.m. A cat jumped out of a vehicle and bit two car wash employees. Hours later, when the vehicle’s owner was tracked down, she informed officers she was not missing a cat and suggested the crime may have been committed by a feline stowaway. The cat was taken to the shelter for further questioning.

4:55 p.m. A stop sign was missing.

6:49 p.m. A Kalispell man was disappointed with officers who refused to go to his wife’s house to see if she was smoking meth.

7:08 p.m. Two men standing next to open containers of alcohol denied they had been drinking.

8:37 p.m. An intoxicated man was threatening to throw rocks at people.

8:52 p.m. A caller concerned about hard seltzer being passed between vehicles at a drive thru put dispatch on hold to place their order.

10:31 p.m. A dispute over loud music escalated into a “volume war” between neighbors.

The fuel pump suggestion seems a good one, but if nothing else, it’s pretty clear that if you stab a hole in it with a knife, it will drain out fine.

Probably need to pull the bed to change the tank  but I would just put a big drain pan and reopen the hole if I were replacing the tank right away.

Some cars stop pumping if they don't see pressure...

I briefly considered lending him a hole saw. What could go wrong?

Pull the bed... Jesus I hope not for his sake . But t hat makes me wonder if it’s not possible to fix the tank without replacing it? It’s plastic, or no knife would go thru it. If it’s drained is there a gas-proof glue that could be used to bond in some new plastic?

Pulling the bed sounds scary but it's normally six or eight bolts and 15 minutes. Pulling the pump and sender to move into the new tank is harder than removing the bed. DO NOT try to patch a plastic fuel tank.

Good advice, thx. What will happen with a patch, out of curiosity?

It will leak fuel. Also super easy to change bed stays on for Ranger.

No problem.  I don’t know if it’ll actually work, but that would be the first thing I’d try.
